FID Licenses and Licenses to Carry

FID Licenses are necessary if you want to own or carry propellant sprays (mace/pepper spray).

To carry a firearm, either concealed or not, you must have a License to Carry.

  • For an FID, you must be at least 15 years old to apply; however, those under 18 years old must present a letter of permission from their parent or guardian

  • You MUST be 21 years of age to apply for a License to Carry (Class A or B).

If you are applying for a new License to Carry or a new FID card, you must have a certificate documenting that you have completed a Certified Firearms Safety Course or Hunter Safety Course prior to beginning your application. You must be a legal resident of the Town of Bourne, and not registered to vote elsewhere.

The application, whether for a new or renewal LTC/FID is done online at the police department between 9 AM and 11 AM everyday; however, a Sergeant must be available to process the application at the time. Since the Sergeant On Duty may need to respond to emergency calls as well, there may be occasions when LTC/FID applications are unable to be processed. It is highly recommended that you call prior to coming to the police department to verify that a Sergeant is available to process your LTC/FID application. We are unable to accommodate appointments and there may be occasions when a Sergeant is available when you can, but responded to an emergency call prior to your arrival at the station.

Availability can be verified by calling (508)759-4451.

You may find it helpful to print out a copy of the application form and bring it, pre-filled, with you; however, the application will be completed live in the on-line system. Bring your Massachusetts drivers license and a check or money order for $100 ($25 for a chemical restricted FID). You will be asked to provide the names, addresses and phone numbers of two references.

How Long

Application processing is initiated once the application is complete; however, current applications are taking over 13-15 weeks to be completed. Be sure to keep this in mind when renewing so your license does not expire.

Licenses are valid for up to 6 years

FID - Propellant Only are $25 (renewals are free)

LTC Class A, Class B and FID are $100.00 (same for renewals)

There is no charge for applicants over the age of 70.
